DFA dance party

Dfa

Here is 4 great mixes taken off a DFA dance party held at the MOMA in NY this past March.  Great mixes of disco, soul and house by DFA records artist. Its pretty much all I've been listening to over the past few days and thought everyone should have these mixes you can enjoy at any time of the day.

1. Justin Miller & Jacques Renault
2. Holy Ghost!
3. T&T (Tim Sweeney & Tim Goldsworthy)
4. Juan Maclean

Also, the fourth mix by Juan Maclean starts with his own track called happy house which is probably one of my favorite songs of 2008 so far...

Juan Maclean - Happy house

(Shout out to Guilt from Les Stacks for putting me on to this one!)

Santi White is the new gold

Santogold

I know it's all over the blogs, but for our most loyal readers / followers / groupies who only check out the sweet fix, here's what all the hype craving kids are listening to right now. Or at least they should. Singer Santogold aka Santi White and producer Johnny Rodeo along side a dream team of collaborators such as Diplo, Switch, MC Spank Rock and M.I.A. came up with a long awaited first album which should make a lot of noise in the next weeks / months. Judge for yourself. And make sure to grab the album on iTunes.

BONUS TRACK

Santogold - Shove it (Switch remix)

Italo disco glitz

Disco

Saying that 80's music influences today's musician is an understatement. This is why I want to do a little incursion in the Italo disco world. Also because I simply love it. This is not a top 6 list of the biggest Italo hits but rather some of my personnal favorites, lots of which I recently discovered. So let's get started.

Gino Soccio is a Canadian (even better, a Montrealer) disco producer. He had a couple of hits such as Dancer and Let's All Chant. But I decided to feature The Runaway, which was released in 1980. I love how the beat evolves throught out the song. Truly one of my most precious musical discoveries.

Gino Soccio - The runaway

Tenebre is the theme of a 1982 Italian horror movie of the same name. Goblin became experts of the horror genre. Listening to the first 2 bars of this song should be enough for anyone (who hasn't lived on a deserted Island for the past year and a half) to spot the sample used by a particularly hip French duo of the moment.

Goblin - Tenebre

The half Italian half american duo Klein & MBO first released 'Dirty Talk' in 1982 in Italty then in the american market where it became a huge hit, influencing the emerging Chicago house sound. Chances are you've heard that one before.

Klein & MBO - Dirty talk

BWH is another Italian band. 'Stop' was releaded in 1983. Love the vocals on this one.

BWH - Stop (original mix)

I don't know much about Image but I know they released 'Hot Stuff' in 1984. I edited it a little because I had the long version and I felt the intro was too long and I wanted to put the focus on the best parts (in my opinion).

Image - Hot Stuff (thomas p edit)

Mike Mareen is a German artist. Italo disco became a huge phenomenon in Germany and the Netherlands in the 80's where a lot of musicians adopted the genre. 'Dancin' in the dark' is Mareen's biggest success from 1985. I deciided to post the Galactica remix which was released that same year. The water drop sounding percussion break at 2:43 is pure genius.

Mike Mareen - Dancin' in the dark (Galactica remix)

Cosmic retro-chic

Grace

First off, I just wanna apologize for the lack of update in the last weeks. I promise I'll be posting more regularly from now on.

So, Hamburg artist Marko Niemerski is the man behind Tensnake. In the likes of In Flagranti, which I  featured on this blog here, Tensnake makes electronic / house music strongky influenced by 80's Italo Disco and synth pop. But he takes it beyond  the simple pastiche to create sexy floating cosmic grooves. He released a first EP in 2006 called Restless and followed it with three more releases in 2007: I Say Mista, Dust and Fried Egg. He also remixed Cassius, Junior Boys, Alexander Robotnik, original italo disco group Camaro's Gang and more recently Sally Shapiro for her soon to be released remix album. But you can get his remix of 'I'll be by your side' already on iTunes. It also seems he's got a new EP on the way to be released on Mule Musiq. Here are some of my favorite tracks of his. You can buy all of his music on iTunes or you can get it on vinyl here.

Tensnake - Hanselstadt

Tensnake - Toshi's Battle

Junior Boys - Fm (Tensnake remix)

Camaro's Gang - Fuerza Major (Tensnake remix)

Freaky disco funk classics

Jimmy_bo_horne_spank

It's been a minute since I last posted some music but I've been listening to a lot of old grooves which I'm planning to feature on here. I thought I'd start with some classic late 70's / early 80's disco funk.  First up is Jimmy "Bo" Horne's Spank. Just by looking at this dude's face on his record cover, you know he's a freak and he means every line of this song. No, but really, how priceless is this cover!? Second song I got on the fullyfitted blog. It's a Devlin edit of a 1978 song from Canadian band (that's right!) Bumblebee Unlimited. It's got it all: mean bassline, violins, piano and some hilarious chip munk like vocals. I love it! Arthur Russell is the man behind Loose Joints' It's all over my face. He died of AIDS in 1992 but left an incredible legacy of funky jams. The last two songs are disco funk but with a latin twist. Candido's Jingo is a dance floor classic. The Santana cover is pretty well known too and is just as good. Two Man Sound is, believe or not a Belgian band. But they were known to mix disco with brasilian sounds. Que Tal America is their one big hit. So that's it for the disco edish but make sure to come back soon as I will  be featuring my favorite italo disco, acid house, electro funk and other unclassified obscure 80's grooves.

Jimmy "Bo" Horne - Spank (1980 Remix)

Bumblebee Unlimited - Lady Bug (Devlin extendit)

Loose Joints - Is it all over my face (Larry Levan Remix)

Candido - Jingo (original 12" mix)

Two man sound - Que Tal America

70's and 80's TV show themes

Miami Vice

The 70's and 80's were the golden era of great TV show themes. Whether it'd be the blaxpoitation soulful and funky kinda themes, the 80's synth-pop anthems or the more classic kinda orchestral type of songs, the following themes had a life of their own, outside of their respective tv serie. A lot of these songs, if not all of them have been sampled and/or covered. The Miami Vice Crockett's theme was covered for the 2006 remake (that version is awful though). It was also covered by Fpu Project. Knightrider was sampled by Panjabi MC on Mundian to Back Ke in 1998 which was then recuperated by Jay-Z for the 2003 hit Beware of the Boys that we all know. The Police Woman theme which gotta be my favorite was sampled by Masta Killa on No Said Date. The S.W.A.T. theme was sampled by The Prodigy while Quincy's Sanford and Sons theme was sampled by Diplo for his remix of M.I.A.'s URAQT. If you know any other great tv show themes, feel free to leave them in the comments.

Jan Hammer - Crockett's Theme (Miami Vice - 1985)

Stu Philips - Knightriders theme

Henry Mancini - Police Woman theme

Rhythm Heritage - S.W.A.T. theme

Morton Stevens - Hawaii Five-0 theme

Quincy Jones - Sanford and sons theme

Spiderman cartoon theme

Fpu Project - Crockett's theme

M.I.A. - URAQT (Diplo mix)

NORE X MSTRKRFT

Nrmstrkrft

Its not a joke. That rave rap thing was totally predictable. I remember telling people 3 years ago that electro rap was going to blow up. I feel like its gonna be a hit but I'm not sure if I like the song. The chorus is good but I'm not sure about the verses...Anyway, look out for the Posse cut remix produced by Justice featuring Gdep, Memphis bleek, Cadillac Tah, Peter Gunz & Killah Priest....

ELI ESCOBAR

Eli

Dj Eli is one of my favorite producer/remixer right now. He really has his own sound and it's not comparable to anything else. What's interesting is that his production is influenced by some older stuff like disco and 80s electro music and he's able to make it sound actual. His twist on music is everything that a dancefloor wants without compromising the musical aspect of the song. Here is a couple of my favorite songs including his new banger with legendary Mark the 45 King & Pase Rock.

45 King & Pase Rock - 900 Number 2K8 (Eli remix)

Keyshia Cole - Shoulda let you go (Eli's put echo on everything mix)

Cassie -  Me and u (Eli banger remix)

Chromeo - Bonafied lovin (Eli remix ft. Pase Rock)

M.I.A. - Bamboo Banga (Eli remix)

Reckoner remix on popular demand

Radiohead

Ever since I've downloaded this track and started playing it, I've been getting request from people to send it to them. Again, last night, the ever lovely Alexandra asked me for it. So I thought it would be a lot easier to just post it on here. This is what this blog is about anyways. Sharing music. Reckoner is a song from Radidohead's latest album In Rainbow and this is the LoveTongueAttack Bmore Remix. The original song being sick has probably a lot to do with the fact this remix is getting some love. But I'm not gonna lie, the "Bmore" kicks and  claps do work pretty well on this song.

Radiohead - Reckoner (LoveTongueAttack Bmore Remix)

I'm in love with a disco siren

Discosirens

Midfield General is Brighton's DJ and producer Damian Harris. He's about to launch his sophomore album next month, 8 years after his first release. The first single Disco Sirens has been floating around for a couple of weeks and it inspired a couple of remixes from the such of D.I.M. and Boy 8-Bit. The song was produced in part by Xavier De Rosnay. You can tell by the signature Justice bassline. Vila from Australian duo Bumblebeez sings on it. So here's the original and the 2 previously mentionned remixes. All three are 320 Kbps, by the way, so you can play them at the club.

MGMT's psychedelic indie pop

Mgmt

Here's the new indie pop band to hit the blogosphere. These 2 Brooklynites met in college and formed a band that was then known as The Management. They later switched MGMT and were signed to Columbia Records in 2006. Rolling Stone magazine recently put them in their Top 10 artists to watch in 2008. What more can I say? I like. Buy the full album here.

MGMT - Electric Feel

MGMT - Weekend Wars

New fire from Sammy Bananas

Sammybananas

A new banger from Fool's Gold's Sammy Bananas. Here is his touch on a song called P-Y-R-A-M-I-D. Make sure to check him out on the Fool's Gold tour with A-Trak, Aoki & Sinden. The Sweet Fix got it first!

Fashionable perversed synthpop disco

Sounds Superb 2

Graphic designer Alex Gloor & producer/dj Sasha Crnobrnja are In Flagranti. These two Swiss cats moved to Brooklyn a long time ago and formed the label Codek Records back in '96. They then became known as In Flagranti, dropping 12"s on the regular since the early 2000's. Most their music is made from late 70's/early 80's disco funk samples reworked with added syncopated basslines and a kitsch yet oh so sexy touch. Almost each of their releases is accompanied by a mini video, most of which are made from edited found footage with an obvious taste for 70's softcore porn aesthetic. They released a new EP last month called Sounds Superb 2. You can listen to most of it on their myspace and get it here. In the mean time, here's some of my favorites tracks and remixes of theirs, mostly from '06 and last year.

In Flagranti - Nonplusultra (Sex Schon Mix)

In Flagranti - Melodymaker

In Flagranti - Genital Blue Room

Antipop vs Asia Argento - Vampy (Inflagranti Remix)

Black Devil Disco & In Flagranti - On Just Foot Forever (In Flagranti Remix)

Kudu - Bar Star (In Flagranti's Sleek City Mix)

Cool like snoop is

Snoop

I don't know whats happenin' with Snoop. I think he's been hangin out with Prince a lot lately or maybe he's just in a midlife crisis.  Anyhow, this track is the greatest thing that happened in hiphop since Lil Wayne's chorus on Duffle bag boy.

Snoop Dogg - Cool

Radiohead's In Rainbow for the street

Amplive Rainydayz

Oakland producer and dj AmpLive released an 8-track EP reinterpreting songs from Radiohead's brilliant latest album In Rainbow with a hip hop approach. While AmpLive intended to sell this EP, a dispute with Radiohead's management (who wasn't involved in the project) was settled with AmpLive being authorized to distribute his music for free in the end. The EP entitled Rainydayz Remixes features appearances by Too $hort, MC Zumbi of Zion I, Chali2na of Jurassic 5 and Del The Funky Homosapien. Here's my 2 favorite songs off this collection. But make sure to download the other great songs over there for free while it lasts.

Radiohead vs AmpLive - Video Tapez ft. Del the Funky Homosapien

Grand Theft hit em with that Canadian bacon

Grand Theft

Grand Theft, one half of dj duo Team Canada, has been killing it lately on the production game. These guys have been rocking parties all over the world for the last 2 years with their fame built on crazy mashups and solid dj skills. Grand Theft hooked me up with a couple of his latest bangers that will surely get any crowd moving. (Sweet Fix Exclusives!!)

Blaqstarr - Shake it to the ground (Grand Theft Remix)

Chromeo - Fancy footwork (Grand Theft club mix)

Twista & Pharell - Give It Up (Grand Theft Acid Mix)

Afrika Bambaataa - Get up (Grand Theft Canadian Club Mix)

Psapp - Cosy In The Rocket (Grand Theft Edit)

The Count & Sinden - Beeper (featuring Kid Sister) Video

Rihanna and the Klaxons sharing the stage

I know! What the hell! Wait for the chorus to hear the boys from the Klaxons throw some of the Golden Skans vocals in the mix. That took place at the Brit Awards last Wednesday night in London if you were wondering.
